CARLA JAMES ARCHITECT ARB                              

Carla is an architect, lecturer and researcher with approximately 15 years of experience. Her portfolio consists of built projects as well as more recently design, teaching and research projects.


She has worked at all stages of the design and construction of private residential, retail and office projects in UK, South Africa and Australia and at Project Architect/Senior Architect level on a number of projects ranging from small and medium-scale, residential, office and retail sectors predominantly built projects to large-scale development and speculative projects within architectural, urbanism, environmental and technology related fields. Projects include multi-residential, prototypical low-cost sustainable housing, new-build private residences, transport/infrastructure projects, offices and retail developments at design to construction stages with significant experience overseeing on-site works. Carla was Associate Director at EDAW/AECOM from 2007-2010 where she oversaw the work on the development of large scale environmental and spatial urban design projects. More recently Carla has been working as a sole-practitioner on private residential projects at feasibility, design and construction phases. Other relevant experience includes obtaining planning permission, listed building approval and conservation area approval for the development of residential properties in London working within boroughs of Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and Islington and involvement in the design and feasibility of proposal for RIBA Drawings Collection at the V+A.


Carla is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture, Environment and Technology and currently runs First Year Studio in Architecture in the Faculty of the Built Environment at London South Bank University. Carla has taught at LSBU since 2007 at First + Second Year level for both Full-Time and Part-Time programmes for undergraduate students in BA Hons Architecture. Previous teaching experience includes First Year studio at Senior Lecturer level, at De Montfort University- Leicester from 2005-2006 and as a Visiting Critic at the Bartlett-UCL in 2005.


Carla is interested in both practice based research and academic research and currently actively engaged in research projects including a submission of her recent paper to the IBEA Conference in 2011, involvement in Architects For Health project in 2012, presentation of paper at forthcoming conference AZA2012 Rescripting Architecture in South Africa and participation in the LSBU REF proposal for 2013.

Carla joined EDAW in October 2007 as Associate Director. Project experience includes proposals for Qatar - Heart of Doha Conceptual Master plan, Saadiyat, Cultural District Master plan, Education City, Doha Construction Project,  feasibility master planning for North West Cambridge, York Central and Cardiff and competitions for Waterloo City and Lex Walsall.

Architect-Sole Practitioner 2005-2011

Between 2005 and 2009 Carla worked on a wide range of small scale residential projects including refurbishments for Bolingbroke Road, London, completed 2007;Talbot Road, London, 2007; Vereker Road, London, completed 2006; Feasibility, Design and Planning Application work for a new-build house in Scotland, a medium density housing development for Hamilton Electricity Works, London, a new-build house in Portugal and a competition for Kielder Observatory in northumberland.
